How to Get ChatGPT and Google AI to Recommend Your Brand

AI tools recommend the brands they can find, understand and verify. Make your site easy to crawl, put clear facts on the pages that matter, earn independent proof from reviews, press and real discussions, and keep every claim the same everywhere it appears. Then test a fixed set of buyer prompts every week so you can see what moves. The 100-day plan below puts all of it in order.

Cited Is Not the Same as Recommended
Most AI SEO advice is about getting cited, where your page shows up as a source link under an answer. That helps, but a citation does not mean the buyer picks you. A recommendation is different. The AI names your brand as the answer when someone asks which option to choose, and that is the moment a sale is decided.
Cited vs recommended
Same AI, two very different outcomes

The buyer now asks for you by name.
| Cited | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| What it looks like | Your page as a source link | Your brand named as the pick |
| Typical prompt | How do I speed up my website? | Best agency to speed up my website? |
| What the buyer does next | Reads the answer, may never click | Searches your name or visits you directly |
| What earns it | One clear, useful page | Proof from many independent sources |
You need both. Our guide to getting cited by AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude covers citations. This one is about winning the best option prompts that end in a decision.
What AI Checks Before It Names a Brand
ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity pull live sources for many answers, then decide which brands they trust enough to name. Four things have to line up before yours makes the cut.
Each layer rests on the one below it. Miss one and the AI names someone else.
- Access. Crawlers can reach and read your pages. Check robots.txt, your sitemap and how pages render, and set up Bing Webmaster Tools as well, since Bing's index feeds Microsoft Copilot and other assistants. Here is which AI crawlers to allow.
- Clarity. Your pages state who you serve, what you offer, what it costs and what you have achieved in plain sentences and tables a model can lift. Schema markup that matches the visible page helps engines read it correctly.
- Proof. Reviews, press coverage, industry lists, comparison articles and genuine forum discussions that say the same thing about you. Your own site makes the claim. Independent sources confirm it.
- Consistency. The same name, services, prices and facts across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. When facts conflict, the AI hedges or picks a rival it is surer about. Entity SEO covers this in depth.
The 100-Day Plan to Get Recommended
Run it in three phases. Each one builds the evidence the next phase needs.
Measure first, fix the foundations, then build proof and scale what works.
Days 1 to 30: Baseline and Access
- Write 30 to 50 prompts your buyers actually ask: best option for a need, problems, you versus a rival, pricing, location and your brand name.
- Run each one in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity. Log whether you are named, your position, the sources cited and whether the description is accurate.
- Fix crawl blocks, broken canonicals, thin service pages and missing schema.
AI visibility log
Track the prompts buyers ask
Week 1 | Baseline
Days 31 to 60: Pages and Proof
- Rebuild your key pages so each opens with a direct answer, then covers who it suits, limits, pricing and setup in headings, lists and tables. Add a last reviewed date.
- Publish honest comparison and alternatives pages for the rivals that keep showing up in your log.
- Earn independent mentions. Share original data with journalists, answer real questions on Reddit and Quora under your own name, and ask happy customers for reviews on the platforms AI already cites in your category.
- Start a claims register: every fact about your brand, from prices to service areas to results, in one sheet with an owner and a review date.
Days 61 to 100: Monitor and Scale
- Rerun the full prompt set every week and compare it with your baseline.
- When an answer gets a fact wrong, trace the source, fix it there and update the claims register.
- Put more budget and time into whatever moved the needle: more comparison pages, more data-backed content, more reviews where the engines look.

How to Measure AI Recommendations
Skip the single AI visibility score. Track four numbers that each tell you something different.
| Metric | What it tells you | Where to track it |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | How often you are named across your prompt set | Weekly prompt log |
| Position | Whether you are the first pick or an also-ran | Prompt log, position column |
| Accuracy | Whether AI gets your prices and services right | Claims register against answers |
| AI revenue | Whether AI visits turn into leads and sales | GA4 custom channel group |
In GA4, create a custom channel group called AI Assistants with one rule, source matches this regex, and place it above Referral:
chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.aiVisits from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode arrive as normal Google organic traffic, so watch those in Search Console instead. For the full prompt testing method, see how to track your brand visibility in ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Mistakes That Keep Brands Out of AI Answers
- Fake reviews and paid praise. Platforms catch coordinated posting, and it wipes out the trust you are trying to build.
- Schema that says more than the page. Markup has to match what visitors can see.
- Treating llms.txt as a shortcut. It is a small, unproven signal and no substitute for crawlable pages. More in llms.txt explained.
- Testing once and moving on. AI answers shift from week to week, so one test tells you very little.
- Hiding your prices. When buyers ask what it costs and your site has no answer, the AI quotes a competitor that does.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get recommended by ChatGPT?
Early movement in mention rate often shows within 60 to 90 days of fixing access, page clarity and proof. It depends on how competitive your category is and how much independent coverage you already have.
Can you pay to be recommended in ChatGPT answers?
No. ChatGPT Ads show as labelled sponsored placements, separate from the answer itself. Our guide to ChatGPT Ads explains how they work.
If I rank first on Google, will AI recommend me?
Not on its own. Strong rankings help because many AI tools pull from search results, but they also weigh independent proof and consistent facts, so a brand can rank first and still be left out of the answer.
Which AI platforms should I track first?
Start with ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, since that is where most buyers ask, then add Gemini and Perplexity. Test the same prompts on every platform so the results compare fairly.
