AI engines cite brands they can find, understand and trust. Make sure your site is indexed by both Google and Bing, write answer-first pages with clear structure, keep your brand details consistent everywhere, and earn mentions on the third-party sites AI already relies on: reviews, Reddit, YouTube and respected publications.

How AI Engines Choose Which Brands To Cite
Most AI answers are not pulled from memory alone. The engine runs a live search, gathers a set of candidate pages, then picks the clearest and most trusted ones to quote. That means two things decide whether you appear: whether your pages get retrieved at all, and whether they are easy to lift a clean answer from.
If you are not retrieved, you cannot be cited.
A surprising number of cited pages do not rank in Google's top ten for the same query. Clarity and trust often beat raw ranking position, which is good news for smaller brands.
What Each Platform Favours
The four big engines overlap, but each has its own habits. Optimise for the shared basics first, then the differences.
| Platform | Leans towards | Your priority |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | Pages that already perform in organic search, YouTube and well-structured content | Strong SEO basics, question-led headings, video |
| ChatGPT | Consensus sources, major publications and the Bing index | Bing indexing, press mentions, trusted listings |
| Perplexity | Real-time search, community discussion and data-rich pages | Reddit presence, fresh content with numbers |
| Claude | In-depth, clearly organised and well-sourced content | Thorough guides with tables and clear sections |
The Content Formats AI Quotes Most
Some page types get cited far more often than others because they answer a question in a way that is easy to extract and hard to argue with. Build these first:
- Comparison pages. Clear side-by-side tables of options, pricing and use cases, including honest mentions of alternatives.
- Step-by-step guides. Numbered processes with one action per step.
- Definitions and explainers. A one-line definition up top, followed by examples.
- Original research. Your own benchmarks, survey results or campaign data.
Every one of these works for human readers too. You are not writing for robots, you are removing friction for everyone.
The Six-Step Citation Playbook
- Be findable everywhere. Check your site is indexed in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and that your robots.txt does not block AI crawlers you want to reach you.
- Lead every page with the answer. Open with a two or three sentence answer, then expand. AI engines lift clean, self-contained passages.
- Structure for extraction. Use question-based headings, short paragraphs, tables and FAQ sections, backed by schema markup.
- Make your brand unambiguous. Keep your name, description, services and locations identical across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
- Earn third-party mentions. AI often cites what others say about you: reviews, Reddit threads, YouTube videos, comparison articles and industry press.
- Publish original data. First-hand numbers, benchmarks and case results get cited far more often than recycled statistics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is getting cited by AI different from SEO?
It builds on SEO. Indexing, authority and helpful content still matter. AI visibility adds answer-first structure, entity consistency and third-party mentions on top.
How long does it take to get cited?
Perplexity can pick up fresh, well-structured content within days. Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT usually take several weeks, depending on how often your site is crawled.
Can I pay to appear in AI answers?
Organic citations cannot be bought. Some platforms now sell clearly labelled ad placements next to answers, but citations inside the answer itself have to be earned.
