llms.txt Explained: What It Is and How to Set It Up

llms.txt is a plain text file at the root of your site that gives AI tools a short, curated guide to your most important pages. It is a proposed standard, not an official ranking factor, and major AI search engines do not confirm using it. It is quick to set up, low risk and useful for AI agents and developer tools, but it does not replace SEO, schema or crawl access.

What llms.txt Is
Websites are built for humans, with menus, scripts and layout that make them hard for language models to read efficiently. The llms.txt proposal suggests a single Markdown file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt that summarises who you are and links to the pages that matter most, written in clean, readable text.
robots.txt sets permissions. llms.txt gives directions.
Does It Help AI Visibility?
Be realistic. Google has said it does not use llms.txt for AI Overviews, and the large AI search engines have not confirmed reading it for ranking or citations. Where it does help today is with AI coding assistants, agents and tools that fetch a site on request and look for a clean summary.
Treat it as cheap insurance and good housekeeping, not a growth lever. The real drivers of AI citations are a clear entity, quotable content and mentions on trusted sites.

- Keep it short. Link your 10 to 30 most important pages, not your whole sitemap.
- Write plain descriptions. One factual line per link, no sales language.
- Upload to the root. It must load at /llms.txt as plain text.
- Keep it current. Update it when you launch services or major guides.
- Check robots.txt too. If AI crawlers are blocked, llms.txt changes nothing. See whether to block or allow AI crawlers.
