Schema Markup for AI Search: The Types That Matter

The short answer

Schema markup tells search engines and AI tools exactly what each page is about and who is behind it. The types that matter most are Organization and Person for identity, Service or Product for what you sell, Article for content, and BreadcrumbList for structure. Use JSON-LD, connect entities with @id, and only mark up what is visible on the page.

Why Schema Helps AI Search

AI engines read pages as text, but they still have to decide who wrote it, which company it belongs to and what facts it states. Schema removes the guesswork. It also feeds Google rich results and the Knowledge Graph, which AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on.

Schema does not force a citation. It makes your content easier to understand and trust, which raises the odds when the engine chooses sources.

The Schema Types That Matter

Schema typeUse it onWhat it tells engines
OrganizationHomepage, sitewide via @idBrand name, logo, address, profiles, founder
PersonAbout page, author biosWho the expert is and where they work
ServiceService pagesWhat you offer, where and by whom
ProductProduct pagesPrice, availability, reviews
Article or BlogPostingBlog posts and guidesAuthor, publisher, dates, topic
BreadcrumbListAll pagesWhere the page sits in the site
FAQPagePages with visible Q and ADirect question and answer pairs
LocalBusinessLocation pagesAddress, hours, geo coordinates

How to Implement It Properly

  1. Use JSON-LD. It is the format Google recommends and the easiest to maintain.
  2. Give core entities a stable @id. For example your domain plus #organization, then reference it from every Service and Article.
  3. Avoid duplicates. SEO plugins often output their own Organization. Align it with yours or you send two conflicting entities.
  4. Mark up only what users can see. Hidden FAQs or fake reviews break guidelines and can trigger manual actions.
  5. Skip self-serving ratings. Review stars on your own Organization are ignored by Google and add risk.
  6. Validate every change. Run the Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator after each update.

Schema Priorities by Business Type

Business typeStart withThen add
Agency or consultancyOrganization, Person, ServiceArticle, BreadcrumbList
Clinic or local serviceLocalBusiness subtype, PersonService, opening hours, geo
Ecommerce storeOrganization, Product with offersBreadcrumbList, MerchantReturnPolicy
SaaS companyOrganization, SoftwareApplicationArticle, FAQPage where visible
Publisher or blogOrganization, Article, PersonBreadcrumbList, ImageObject

Start with the identity layer, then what you sell, then content. That order makes sure every later piece of schema has an entity to point back to.

Where Schema Fits in AI SEO

Schema is one layer of entity SEO, alongside consistent profiles and third-party mentions. On its own it will not make a weak page rank, but on a strong page it removes doubt. Combine it with answer-first content for AI Overviews and you cover both understanding and extraction. Schema audits and rebuilds are part of every AI SEO project we take on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does schema directly improve rankings?

Not directly. It helps search engines understand content and qualify for rich results, which can lift click-through rate and support visibility in AI answers.

Is FAQ schema still worth adding?

Google now shows FAQ rich results mainly for authoritative government and health sites, but the markup still helps other engines read your question and answer pairs. Only use it for FAQs visible on the page.

Can I add schema without a developer?

Yes. Plugins like Rank Math handle the basics, and a code snippet plugin can add custom JSON-LD. Validate everything after publishing.
