Google Shopping Ads for eCommerce: Feed, Structure and Bidding

The short answer

Google Shopping performance is decided mostly by your product feed, then by campaign structure and bidding. Clear titles, accurate prices, strong images and complete attributes decide which searches your products show for. Group products by margin and performance, bid to a ROAS target based on your break-even, and keep Merchant Center clear of errors.

How Google Shopping Works

Shopping ads have no keywords. Google reads your product feed in Merchant Center and decides which searches each product matches. That means the feed is your targeting. A vague title or missing attribute does not just lower click-through rate, it stops your product from showing for the searches that sell.

Feed Optimisation: The Biggest Lever

AttributeWhat good looks likeCommon mistake
TitleBrand, product type, key feature, size or colourInternal product names buyers never search
ImageClean, well lit, product filling the frameLifestyle shots with small products or text overlays
Price and availabilityMatches the landing page exactlySale prices not synced, causing disapprovals
GTIN and brandCorrect barcodes for branded goodsMissing identifiers limiting reach
Product type and categorySpecific, consistent hierarchyEverything in one generic category
Custom labelsMargin, best seller, seasonal, clearanceNot used, so no way to segment bids

Title rewrites alone often lift impressions and clicks noticeably, because the product starts matching the words buyers actually type.

Campaign Structure That Scales

  1. Segment by margin. Use custom labels to separate high, medium and low margin products so each gets a fitting ROAS target.
  2. Separate heroes. Best sellers get their own campaign or asset group so budget is never starved.
  3. Handle zombies. Products with no impressions often need better titles, not more budget.
  4. Choose Standard or Performance Max deliberately. PMax adds YouTube, Display and Gmail reach. Standard Shopping gives more control and clearer search term data. Many stores run both. See Performance Max vs Search.
  5. Exclude what you cannot fulfil. Out-of-stock or loss-making items should not soak up spend.

Bidding to Profit, Not Revenue

Set your ROAS target from your break-even, not from a number that sounds good. If your gross margin after fees and shipping is 40 percent, break-even ROAS is 2.5. Anything below that loses money on the first order. Our break-even ROAS calculator does the full maths.

Titles That Match How People Search

Write product titles in the order buyers search: brand, product type, then the attributes that decide the purchase such as size, colour, material or model. Put the most important words in the first 70 characters, because that is what most shoppers see.

Weak titleStrong title
Classic Tee NavyBrand Men's Organic Cotton T-Shirt, Navy, Crew Neck
Model X200Brand X200 Cordless Drill 18V with 2 Batteries
Summer DressBrand Linen Midi Dress, Sage Green, Sizes 6 to 18

Test title changes on a group of products first, then roll out what lifts impressions and click-through rate.

Merchant Center Health Checks

  • Fix every disapproval and warning, starting with price mismatches and missing identifiers
  • Add shipping and returns settings so ads show delivery information
  • Turn on automatic item updates only as a backup, not a fix for a bad feed
  • Link Google Analytics and enable enhanced conversions for accurate revenue data. See conversion tracking setup

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use Performance Max or Standard Shopping?

Most stores benefit from Performance Max for reach, with Standard Shopping kept for control and clearer search data on key products. Test both against the same ROAS target.

Why are my products not showing?

Usually disapprovals in Merchant Center, missing identifiers, low bids or titles that do not match what people search. Check Merchant Center diagnostics first.

How long does a new Shopping campaign take to settle?

Expect two to four weeks for smart bidding to learn, longer for low-volume stores. Avoid big target changes during that period.
