The short answer

Search campaigns give you control over keywords, ads and budgets, and work best for high-intent lead generation. Performance Max uses Google AI to run ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps from one campaign, and works best for ecommerce or accounts with strong conversion data. Most accounts get the best results by running Search for core intent and testing Performance Max alongside it.

How Each Campaign Type Works

A Search campaign shows text ads when people type queries that match your keywords. You choose the keywords, match types, negatives, ad copy and bids. You can see which search terms triggered your ads and cut the ones that waste money.

Performance Max takes your goals, budget, creative assets, audience signals and product feed, then decides where and to whom to show ads across all Google inventory. You give up most of the levers in exchange for reach and automated optimisation.

When Search Wins

  • Lead generation for services, where intent sits in the query: emergency plumber, divorce lawyer, ERP consultant
  • Smaller budgets that cannot fund several channels at once
  • Accounts with little or no conversion history
  • Markets where you must control exactly which queries trigger ads
  • When you need clear reporting to prove what works

When Performance Max Wins

  • Ecommerce with a healthy product feed and steady sales
  • Accounts with enough conversions each month for the AI to learn
  • Brands with strong creative assets: images, video and multiple headlines
  • When Search is already capturing core demand and you want more reach
  • Local businesses chasing store visits and calls through Maps

How to Run Both Without Overlap

  1. Protect brand traffic. Add brand exclusions to Performance Max so it does not take credit for people already searching your name.
  2. Keep exact match core terms in Search. When a query exactly matches a Search keyword, Search usually takes priority.
  3. Add account-level negatives. Block irrelevant terms such as jobs, training or competitor names you do not want.
  4. Feed it good data. Import offline conversions and lead quality so PMax optimises for real customers, not form spam.
  5. Judge on total results. Compare blended cost per acquisition and revenue before and after the test, not each campaign in isolation.

Conversion tracking decides whether either campaign type succeeds. If your tracking is weak, fix it first. Running Search and Performance Max side by side is standard in our Google Ads management. Our breakdown of Google Ads management cost covers what proper management should include, and Google Ads cost by industry gives benchmarks to sense-check results.

Common Performance Max Mistakes

  • Launching with weak or missing conversion tracking
  • Leaving brand traffic unprotected, which inflates results
  • Using one asset group for every product and audience
  • Uploading low-quality images or no video, so Google auto-creates weak ads
  • Judging after a week instead of allowing several weeks of learning

Setting Up Performance Max Properly

If the checklist points to a test, set the campaign up so it has the best chance of success and so you can read the result honestly.

  1. Start from a clean conversion goal. Optimise for the action that is closest to revenue, such as purchase or qualified lead, not page views or button clicks.
  2. Split asset groups by theme. Group products or services that share an audience and message, rather than one group for everything.
  3. Supply your own creative. Upload several images in each size, at least one real video, and five or more headlines and descriptions.
  4. Add audience signals. Customer lists, website visitors and custom segments based on your best keywords help the campaign find the right people faster.
  5. Set a stable budget. Avoid large daily changes during the first weeks, as each big change restarts learning.

Reading the Results

Performance Max reports look good on their own because they include conversions from every channel and sometimes from people who would have bought anyway. Judge the test at account level. Compare total conversions, total cost and cost per acquisition for the weeks before and after launch, with brand exclusions in place. If total results rise at an acceptable cost, scale gradually. If Search results fall by roughly the same amount Performance Max reports, it is mostly moving credit rather than adding customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Performance Max better than Search?

Neither is better in every case. Search gives control and suits lead generation. Performance Max gives reach and automation and suits ecommerce with good data.

Can Performance Max and Search run together?

Yes. Most strong accounts run both, with Search covering core keywords and Performance Max adding reach.

Does Performance Max show search terms?

It shows search term insights and categories, with more detail than before, but less than a Search campaign search terms report.

How long should a Performance Max test run?

Allow at least four to six weeks, with a stable budget, before judging results.
