Google Ads Management Cost: Agency Fees Explained

The short answer

Google Ads management is usually charged as a percentage of monthly ad spend, a flat monthly fee, or a hybrid with a minimum fee or a percentage, whichever is higher. The fee is separate from your ad spend, which goes to Google. A fair fee is one that pays for real optimisation work and still leaves the account profitable.

Ad Spend vs Management Fee

Every Google Ads budget has two parts. Ad spend is what you pay Google for clicks. The management fee is what you pay the person or agency running the account. Mixing the two up is the most common reason businesses think an agency is expensive or cheap when it is neither.

A strong Google Ads management partner earns its fee by making the ad spend work harder: lower cost per lead, better lead quality and more revenue from the same budget.

The Three Common Pricing Models

ModelHow it worksWorks best whenWatch out for
Percentage of spendFee is a set percentage of monthly ad spendBudgets are mid to large and growingFee rises with spend even if work does not
Flat monthly feeFixed fee for an agreed scopeSpend is stable and scope is clearScope creep, or too little time for big accounts
HybridMinimum fee or percentage of spend, whichever is higherSmall accounts that plan to scaleCheck where the switch point sits

Performance-based fees, paid per lead or per sale, also exist but are less common, because the agency carries the risk of things it does not control, such as your sales process and pricing.

What Should Be Included

The fee should cover the full job, not just bid changes. At minimum, expect these inside a monthly fee:

  • Account and campaign structure, keyword research and match type strategy
  • Negative keyword management and search term reviews
  • Ad copy, assets, sitelinks, callouts and promotions
  • Conversion tracking with GA4 and Enhanced Conversions, plus UTM setup
  • Bidding strategy, budget pacing and ongoing optimisation
  • Monthly reporting on leads, sales, cost per acquisition and ROAS

Landing page design, creative production for video and display, and CRM integrations are often priced separately. Ask before you sign.

Is Your Fee Worth It?

Enter your monthly ad spend, management fee and results. The calculator shows your total cost per lead with the fee included, which is the number that matters.

0Cost per lead incl. fee
0Revenue from leads
0Return on total cost

If the fee is a small share of total cost and the return on total cost is healthy, the fee is not your problem. If returns are weak, look at tracking, keyword targeting and landing pages before switching agencies. Our Google Ads cost by industry benchmarks help you sense-check cost per lead.

Hidden Costs to Ask About

The headline fee is rarely the full picture. Before signing, ask whether any of these are billed separately:

  • Setup fee. A one-off charge for audits, restructuring and tracking. Reasonable if the work is real and documented.
  • Landing pages. Often the single biggest lever on cost per lead, and often outside the monthly fee.
  • Creative. Display banners, YouTube videos and Performance Max assets need design time.
  • Tools. Some agencies pass on the cost of reporting dashboards, call tracking or bid tools.
  • Minimum term and notice period. Know how long you are committed and how much notice you need to give.

None of these are bad in themselves. The problem is discovering them after you sign. A transparent agency lists them in the proposal.

How to Compare Agency Quotes

  1. Compare scope, not price. List the tasks in each proposal side by side.
  2. Ask who does the work. A senior strategist and a junior executor are both fine, but you should know who touches your account.
  3. Check account ownership. The Google Ads account must be in your name with the agency given access.
  4. Look at the reporting sample. If it shows only clicks and impressions, expect the same focus in management.
  5. Ask about the first 90 days. A clear plan matters more than promises. Here is what to expect in the first 90 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage do agencies charge for Google Ads?

Percentage models commonly sit somewhere between 10% and 20% of ad spend, with lower percentages for larger budgets. Most add a minimum monthly fee so small accounts are still worth managing properly.

Is the management fee included in my ad budget?

Usually not. Ad spend is paid directly to Google, and the management fee is paid to the agency. Always confirm this in writing.

Can I run Google Ads myself instead?

Yes, if you have the time to learn tracking, keyword strategy and testing. Most businesses find a specialist recovers the fee through lower wasted spend.

How long should an agency contract be?

Three months is a sensible minimum to judge results, because accounts need time to gather data. Avoid long lock-ins without clear performance reviews.
