The short answer

Meta lead campaigns on Facebook and Instagram average about $1.80 per click and $27.39 per lead, with an 8.54% conversion rate. Traffic campaigns are far cheaper per click at around $0.60. Dental, beauty and home improvement sit at the top for cost per lead ($43 to $62), while real estate, careers and sport sit near $12 to $15.

How Meta Ads Pricing Works

Meta Ads run on an auction too, but you are not bidding on keywords. You are bidding for attention in a feed, and Meta charges mostly by impressions (CPM). Your cost per click and cost per lead fall out of two things: how much those impressions cost, and how well your creative turns them into clicks and actions.

That is why Meta Ads management is mostly a creative and conversion job. Two advertisers in the same industry can pay a similar CPM and still end up with very different cost per lead.

Average Meta Ads Benchmarks

The most widely used reference is the LocaliQ and WordStream Facebook ads benchmark study. Its latest figures split results by campaign objective, which matters, because traffic and lead campaigns behave very differently.

Traffic clicks look cheap, but they are optimised for clicks, not outcomes. If you need leads or sales, judge Meta on cost per lead or cost per purchase, never on CPC.

Cost Per Lead by Industry

Real estate stands out: very low cost per lead (about $14) thanks to a 9.95% conversion rate. The catch is lead quality. Cheap real estate leads often need heavy qualification, which is why we cover fixing low quality leads as a separate topic.

Why Cost Per Lead Varies So Much

Cost per lead is CPC divided by conversion rate, so an industry can have cheap clicks and still pay a lot per lead, or the reverse. The full lead-campaign figures show where each industry loses or gains.

IndustryCTRCPCConversion rate
Dentists and dental1.62%$5.706.07%
Beauty and personal care1.35%$2.975.63%
Home improvement2.14%$2.185.32%
Education1.74%$1.7215.87%
Real estate4.17%$1.279.95%
Careers and employment3.52%$0.735.38%

Dental pays the most per click and converts modestly, which doubles the damage. Education pays an average click price but converts almost twice as well as most industries, which keeps its cost per lead below the average. The lesson for any account: when cost per lead is high, find out whether the problem is the click price or the conversion rate before changing anything.

These are US figures. CPMs differ widely by country and audience, with markets such as India running far lower per thousand impressions than the US, UK or Australia. Lead values differ too, so compare cost per lead against what a customer is worth in your market, not against another country.

Meta Ads vs Google Ads Cost

Meta usually wins on cost per lead, Google usually wins on intent. On the same benchmark sets, the average Meta lead costs about $27 against about $70 on Google Ads. But a Google lead searched for you, while a Meta lead was interrupted while scrolling.

  • Meta: cheaper leads, bigger reach, demand creation. Best for visual offers, impulse buys, events and services people do not search for yet.
  • Google: more expensive leads, higher buying intent. Best for urgent and high-value services people actively search for.

Most growing businesses need both: Meta to create demand, Google to capture it.

What Pushes Your Meta Ads Cost Up

  1. Creative fatigue. The same ad shown too often loses attention, CTR falls and cost per lead climbs. Fresh creative every few weeks keeps costs stable.
  2. Weak creative variety. Meta now uses your creative to find the audience. Creative is the new targeting, so a narrow set of ads limits who you can reach cheaply.
  3. Broken tracking. Without the Conversions API, Meta sees fewer conversions and optimises on weaker signals.
  4. Seasonality. CPMs rise sharply in the run-up to major retail events, as every brand competes for the same feed space.
  5. Landing page mismatch. A great ad sending people to a slow or generic page wastes the click you already paid for.

How to Lower Your Meta Cost Per Lead

Start with tracking, then creative, then the landing experience. Set up the pixel and Conversions API with deduplication, test several distinct creative angles each month, and match each ad to a page that continues the same message. Instant forms often look cheaper, but test them against website leads before scaling. If your costs are already well above the benchmark, read how to cut a high cost per lead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Meta Ads cost per month?

There is no minimum, but most businesses need enough budget for around 50 conversions a week per ad set for Meta to learn properly. For lead generation that often means several thousand dollars a month in competitive markets.

Are Instagram ads more expensive than Facebook ads?

Instagram placements often have higher CPMs, but they can convert better for visual and younger audiences. Running both through Advantage+ placements usually gives the lowest blended cost.

What is a good cost per lead on Meta Ads?

Around the industry average is a fair start. What matters is cost per qualified lead and cost per customer against your margins.

Why did my Meta Ads cost suddenly increase?

The usual causes are creative fatigue, a seasonal CPM spike, tracking issues after an update, or audience saturation. Check frequency and CTR first.
