How to Set Up ChatGPT Ads: Step-by-Step With Tracking

To set up ChatGPT Ads, create an advertiser account in OpenAI Ads Manager at ads.openai.com, confirm your business and billing details, build a campaign with the right objective, target it with plain-language context hints instead of keywords, and install the OpenAI Measurement Pixel and Conversions API before you spend. Tracking first, budget second.

Before You Set Up ChatGPT Ads
ChatGPT Ads show sponsored placements below ChatGPT answers, matched to the conversation rather than to keywords. If you want the background on how the auction and pricing work first, read ChatGPT Ads explained. Then gather these before you open Ads Manager:
- Business details. Legal business name, website, country, currency and time zone for the entity that will advertise and be billed.
- Payment method. A card or billing profile in the business name.
- Brand assets. Your brand name as it should appear in ads, a square logo or favicon, and a few square images.
- Landing pages. One focused page per offer, fast on mobile, with a clear next step.
- Site access. Access to your website, Google Tag Manager or developer, because tracking goes in before launch.
Step 1: Create Your ChatGPT Ads Manager Account
Go to ads.openai.com and sign in with an OpenAI account, ideally on a work email your business controls. Eligible business advertisers can also start setup through ChatGPT Ads Manager inside ChatGPT itself.
During setup you confirm your country or region, currency, time zone, legal business name, website and billing. Check every field before submitting, because OpenAI notes that some account-level details cannot be edited after the account is created.
Once the account is live, the owner can invite team members. If an agency runs your campaigns, keep the account in your business name and give the agency access. It is the same ownership rule we follow on every Google Ads and Meta Ads account.
Step 2: Choose the Right Campaign Objective
The objective decides what you pay for and what the system optimises toward.
| Objective | You pay for | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Every 1,000 impressions (CPM) | You want reach for a launch or a new category |
| Clicks | Each click (CPC) | You want traffic and fast, clear feedback |
| Conversion-optimised clicks | Clicks, with delivery steered toward likely converters | Tracking is live and conversions are flowing steadily |
Start with Clicks if your tracking is new. Move to conversion-optimised bidding once the pixel is recording a steady stream of leads or sales. Treat the objective as fixed once a campaign is live: to test a different one, create a new campaign.
Step 3: Target With Context Hints, Not Keywords
This is where ChatGPT Ads differ most from Google and Meta. Each ad group gets a context hint: a short, plain-language description of the conversations where your ad is relevant. The system matches on meaning, so a list of keywords performs worse than a clear description of the person and their goal.
A strong context hint covers four things: who is asking, what they are trying to do, the scope that makes them a fit, and who to exclude.
| Approach | Example |
|---|---|
| Weak: keyword list | accountant, tax accountant, small business accounting, bookkeeping |
| Strong: context hint | A UK small business owner asking how to handle VAT returns or choose an accountant for a growing limited company. Not students or personal tax questions. |
Split ad groups by intent, not by product. Someone comparing providers and someone asking how a process works need different hints and different ads.
Step 4: Write Ads That Fit the ChatGPT Format
ChatGPT ads appear below the answer, clearly labelled as sponsored, with your brand name, logo, a short headline, a one-line description and an image. Space is tight, so every word has to earn its place.
- Answer the conversation. The best ads read like the natural next step after ChatGPT's answer.
- One benefit per ad. Lead with the outcome, then add one proof point.
- Square images that read small. One clear subject, no tiny text.
- Three to five variations per ad group. You cannot tell whether the hint or the creative is failing with only one ad.
- Match the landing page. Repeat the promise of the ad above the fold. See how to fix a low conversion rate if clicks are not turning into leads.
Step 5: Set Up ChatGPT Ads Tracking
Without tracking, Ads Manager only shows impressions, clicks and spend. With it, you see which conversations produce leads and sales, and you unlock conversion-optimised bidding. OpenAI provides two tools that work together.
- Create your Pixel ID. In Ads Manager, open the Conversions tab and create a pixel. The same tab gives you a Conversions API key.
- Install the Measurement Pixel. Add the OpenAI Measurement Pixel snippet near the top of the head on every page, or load it through Google Tag Manager or a WordPress plugin. No API key is ever placed in the browser.
- Fire conversion events. Send an event when a lead form is submitted or an order completes, with value and currency for purchases.
- Add the Conversions API. Send the same conversions from your server, CRM or store backend through the Conversions API. Use the same event ID in the pixel and the server event so each conversion is counted once, and test with validation mode before going live.
- Tag every ad URL. Add UTMs so GA4 and your CRM attribute the traffic:
utm_source=chatgpt&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=[campaign]&utm_content=[ad-group] - Handle consent. Configure the pixel's consent controls where your markets require it, and mention the pixel in your privacy policy.
Run the pixel and the Conversions API together. Matching event IDs stop double counting.
| Tool | Runs in | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Measurement Pixel | The visitor's browser | Fast setup and on-site actions as they happen | Ad blockers, browser limits and consent |
| Conversions API | Your server | Confirmed orders, CRM-qualified leads and offline sales | Needs a developer, plugin or server-side GTM |
Before launch, trigger a test lead or order and confirm it appears in the Conversions tab. If it does not show there, do not spend.

Step 6: Launch and Optimise the First 30 Days
Submit your campaign for review. Once approved, follow a simple rhythm:
- Week 1: verify. Confirm conversions in Ads Manager match your CRM or store. Avoid daily edits while delivery settles.
- Weeks 2 to 3: refine. Pause the weakest ad variations and rewrite context hints on ad groups with low click-through rates.
- Week 4: compare and scale. Compare cost per acquisition with your Google Ads and Meta Ads results, then raise budgets on winners in steps of around 20%.
Judge results on profit, not just platform numbers. Our break-even ROAS calculator shows the return you need, and these paid ads mistakes apply to ChatGPT Ads as much as any other channel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a minimum budget for ChatGPT Ads?
The self-serve Ads Manager removed the large minimums of the early pilot. Budgets are set at campaign level, so you can start with a test budget and scale what works.
Which countries can run ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads launched in the US and are rolling out to more countries. Ads Manager shows during setup whether your business location and target markets are supported.
Do I need the pixel to run ChatGPT Ads?
No, but without it you only see impressions, clicks and spend. The pixel and Conversions API connect spend to leads and sales, and conversion-optimised bidding depends on them.
Can advertisers see ChatGPT conversations?
No. OpenAI states that advertisers do not receive individual conversations or personal details, and that ads do not change ChatGPT's answers.
