Google Is Auto-Upgrading Search Campaigns to AI Max: 5 Checks Before It Costs You

Google AI Max is now switched on automatically for Search campaigns that used Automatically Created Assets or the campaign-level broad match setting. Your ads can now match searches you never bid on and use headlines Google writes for you. Standard keyword campaigns without those two settings are untouched. If yours were upgraded, run the five checks below this week.

What Google AI Max Actually Changes
Google AI Max is a bundle of automation for Search campaigns. It combines three features: search term matching, which lets Google show your ads on queries beyond your keyword list; text customisation, which writes headlines and descriptions from your landing pages; and final URL expansion, which can send a click to a different page on your site than the one you chose.
Google is moving eligible campaigns onto AI Max automatically, mirroring the old settings as closely as possible. Most advertisers only notice when their search terms report fills with queries they never targeted.
What each old setting turns into after the upgrade.
Is Your Campaign Affected by the AI Max Upgrade?
Only two settings trigger the automatic switch. Individual broad match keywords inside your ad groups do not. Use the checker to see what happens to each campaign.

Five Checks to Run This Week
- Open the search terms report. Look at the match source column. It shows whether a query came from your keywords, AI Max broad match expansion or keywordless matching.
- Add negatives fast. Block irrelevant, low-intent and competitor terms you cannot win. Account-level negative lists apply here too.
- Set brand controls. Use brand inclusions and exclusions so AI Max does not bid on terms that damage efficiency or trigger legal issues.
- Review Google-written ad copy. Filter assets by automatically created and remove anything off-brand, inaccurate or non-compliant.
- Lock down final URLs. If final URL expansion is on, exclude pages that should never receive paid traffic, such as careers, blog or policy pages.
AI Max Features at a Glance
| Feature | What it does | Your control |
|---|---|---|
| Search term matching | Shows ads on relevant searches beyond your keyword list | Negative keywords and brand settings |
| Text customisation | Writes headlines and descriptions from your site | Review and remove assets |
| Final URL expansion | Sends clicks to the page Google thinks fits best | URL inclusions and exclusions |
Google's own announcement on the Google Ads and Commerce blog confirms the upgrade path, including Dynamic Search Ads, which move to AI Max on a later timeline.
When AI Max Helps and When It Hurts
Google AI Max works well for accounts with clean conversion tracking, strong landing pages and enough volume for Smart Bidding to learn. It struggles in accounts with thin data, loose tracking or strict brand and compliance rules, where wider matching quietly pulls in expensive, low-intent traffic. The fix is not to fear automation. It is to give it clear signals and firm guardrails, which is exactly how our Google Ads management runs every upgraded account. How to Read AI Max Results in Your Reports
The biggest mistake after an upgrade is judging AI Max on blended campaign numbers. Split the traffic first, then decide.
| What to check | Where to find it | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Match source | Search terms report, match source column | AI Max queries converting near your keyword average |
| Cost per conversion | Campaign view, before and after upgrade | Flat or lower after the first few weeks |
| Landing page mix | Landing pages report | Clicks going to pages built to convert |
| Asset quality | Asset report, filtered by automatically created | On-brand, accurate headlines with strong CTR |
Should You Switch Other Campaigns to AI Max?
Not all at once. Pick one campaign with steady conversion volume and run Google AI Max as a controlled experiment against your current setup for four to six weeks. Keep the same budget and bidding, then compare cost per conversion and conversion value. If it wins, roll it out gradually. If it loses, you have hard data instead of a guess, and your core campaigns stay protected while you learn.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google AI Max affect every Search campaign?
No. Only campaigns that used Automatically Created Assets or the campaign-level broad match setting are upgraded automatically. Campaigns built on standard keywords are not.
Can I turn AI Max features off after the upgrade?
You can adjust individual features such as text customisation and final URL expansion in campaign settings, and control matching with negatives and brand settings.
Will AI Max lower my ROAS?
It can in the first weeks if new queries are low quality. Close monitoring of the search terms report and quick negative keyword work usually brings return back in line.
