Negative Keywords: How to Build a List That Stops Wasted Spend

Negative keywords stop your Google Ads from showing on searches that will never convert. Build the list from your search terms report, group it into shared lists by theme, use the right negative match type, and review it every week at first. A clean negative list is often the fastest way to cut cost per lead without touching bids.

Why Negative Keywords Matter More Now
Broad match, Performance Max and AI Max all widen the searches your ads can appear on. That reach finds new buyers, but it also pulls in job seekers, students, people looking for something cheap or unrelated, and research queries with no intent to buy. Negative keywords are the guardrail that keeps that reach profitable.
In most accounts we audit, 10 to 30 percent of spend goes on search terms that could never become a customer. That money comes straight back when the list is built properly.
Negatives turn search term reports into saved budget.
Negative Match Types Explained
Negative match types behave differently from normal keywords. They do not expand to close variants, so you often need singular and plural versions.
| Negative match type | Blocks | Example negative | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad | Searches containing all the words, any order | cheap course | Broad themes you never want |
| Phrase | Searches containing the words in that order | "how to" | Research and DIY phrases |
| Exact | Only that exact search | [marketing jobs] | One specific waste query |
Where to Find Negative Keywords
- Search terms report. Sort by cost with zero conversions. This is your main source.
- Insights and Performance Max search themes. Check the categories PMax is matching and exclude the wrong ones.
- Sales and call feedback. If the team keeps hearing the same wrong enquiry, the search behind it is a negative.
- Common waste themes. Jobs, careers, salary, course, training, cheap, DIY, template, PDF, meaning and competitor brand searches you do not want.
- Your own brand on non-brand campaigns. Keep brand traffic in its own campaign so you can see true non-brand performance.
| Theme | Example negatives | Who should add it |
|---|---|---|
| Jobs | jobs, careers, hiring, salary, vacancy | Almost every service business |
| Learning | course, training, tutorial, certification | Agencies, consultants, software |
| Low budget | cheap, cheapest, discount code | Premium services and brands |
| DIY | how to, yourself, template, example | Done-for-you services |
| Wrong product | Services or items you do not sell | Everyone, based on search terms |

How to Organise Your Lists
Use shared negative keyword lists in the Tools menu so one list covers many campaigns. A clean setup has an account-wide waste list for jobs and learning terms, a list per product or service line, and campaign-level negatives that stop campaigns from competing for the same search. For Performance Max, add account-level negatives so the same waste is blocked there too.
A Weekly Search Term Routine
Set a fixed 20 minute slot each week. Open the search terms report for the last seven days, sort by cost, and work down the list until terms no longer have meaningful spend. Each term gets one of three decisions: keep, add as a keyword, or add as a negative.
| Search term signal | Decision |
|---|---|
| Spend, clicks, conversions | Keep or add as an exact keyword |
| Spend, no conversions, wrong intent | Add as a negative |
| Spend, no conversions, right intent | Check landing page and ad before blocking |
| Very low spend | Leave and review next week |
Log what you add and why. When performance shifts, that log makes it easy to see whether a negative blocked something valuable.
Mistakes That Block Good Traffic
- Over-blocking with broad negatives. A broad negative like repair also blocks searches such as repair service near me, even if you offer repairs. Check before you add.
- Adding negatives on low data. One click with no conversion is not proof. Look for spend patterns.
- Blocking terms you actually serve. Always cross-check against your service list and landing pages.
- Never reviewing the list. Business lines change. Audit negatives every quarter.
Negative keywords work best with a sound account structure. See our guide to Google Ads lead generation structure and how to fix a high cost per lead. Weekly search term reviews are part of every Google Ads management account we run.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I add negative keywords?
Weekly for new or growing accounts, then every two to four weeks once the list is mature. Large broad match or Performance Max accounts need more frequent reviews.
Can I add negative keywords to Performance Max?
Yes. Account-level negative keywords apply to Performance Max, and brand exclusions can be set at campaign level.
Do negative keywords match plurals and misspellings?
No. Negatives do not expand to close variants, so add singular, plural and common misspellings where they matter.
